Alex J Lowell

I am a Korean woman based in Texas that loves to work with her hands and is extremely detail oriented. Ceramics, painting, drawing, and printmaking are just a few of the areas I like to work in aside from digital media. Because of my fine arts background, my artworks usually have meaning behind every decision that goes into them. Many of them have a theme of duality that is rather dark hidden underneath an image that makes the idea more approachable. I would love to answer any questions or chat so do not hesitate to email or message through social media.

Artist Statement

I live with Harm Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, which is an obsessive fear of harmful thoughts, in which the mind latches onto violent intrusive thoughts. A person afflicted typically uses compulsive behaviors to rid themselves of these thoughts. In our society, there is a stigma against the issue of mental health, one that keeps those afflicted, such as myself, from talking about what is happening to them. The goal of my art is to explain what is happening in my thoughts, and to show those thoughts in a clear, approachable way. The source photographs are also somewhat therapeutic. I use the idea of ball-jointed dolls to represent how hollow and meaningless my thoughts can be. Thoughts, I believe, are separate from what makes a person who they are – having violent thoughts does not make a person violent. I further emphasize the separation of thought and action through the eyes. Eyes are expressive and tell a lot about a person. In my latest works, my figures do not make eye contact with the viewer and appear expressionless.
